Raglan Sweater V Detail Hack
Ever wondered how people add that cool V detail to shirts and sweaters? Here is a quick tutorial on how to do that using the raglan sweater.
First off, I use my coverstitch machine to do this. If you do not have a coverstitch machine but have another fancy stitch on your sewing machine that would look cool, go ahead and use that. You can also try it out on some scraps of fabric first.
For this tutorial I’m using a french terry fabric and actually using the wrong side of the V to create a textural element. If you just want the stitching of the V it’s as simple as marking where you want and sewing right on the front of the sweater or shirt!
Start by taking a scrap piece of fabric and fold it together (it doesn’t matter if right or wrong sides are together).
Then take your pattern piece and lay it on the fold near the top. Cut along the curve. Where you stop will depend on how big you want your V to be. Play with it and see what you like!
Then take a flat edge and cut a straight line creating the V!
Open up your V and pin it to the front of the sweater. I had the wrong side of the V facing me so the right sides are facing each other.
Using a coverstitch machine (or whatever machine you’re using) sew from from the top and about 1/2" past the bottom of the V as shown.
Now that you have some nice looper stitches holding the V in place and creating a guide for you do sew on the wrong side this time.
Lining your needle up with the outer edge, sew again but this time on the back of the sweater.
Now you’ll notice that on the front side, there are some strings hanging out in the front. Take a needle, thread the string through it then pull it to the backside.
Tie the threads and trim!
Super simple right?? Then finish off the sweater according to the instructions! You’re awesome!!
